Text Box: meeting we will start the budget planning process for 2010 so that we can provide as much information as possible, as early as possible, for the next annual meeting. Given the radical change in the EWM population we are looking at ways to trim the budget and leverage any surplus we have so that the mill rate and special assessment can be reduced. We are sensitive to the fact that county and state taxes will likely rise and that the current economy is challenging us all.
Please join us at the next meeting and give us your input. If you can’t be there, feel free to email us, or write us. We will make sure all comments are presented at the meeting.
Please also think about becoming a board member. One position is opening up this year.
In the meantime, the Board hopes you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday. Text Box: Last year at this time I had talked about a hard winter and a mild summer and as I look out my window and see a gray mild day, 2009 feels like a rerun of 2008 with the exception of the hard spring storms in 2008.
Our Spring inspection of the lake, where we map the presence of Eurasian Water Milfioil(EWM), yielded so little EWM again that we canceled the Spring chemical treatment for the second year in a row. And, as some of you may have noticed, the algae known as chara is as pervasive as ever, sending large mounds to the surface, dotting the lake in places never before seen.
Since chara is an algae, it feeds from taking nutrients right out of the water (hence our nice clear water). It really has no root structure to speak of and is only loosely attached to the lake bed. We try to harvest the mounds that come to the surface but we always run the risk of dislodging larger chunks up in Text Box: the process. If the summer warms up we could see significant chara mounding and will have to address that on a case by case basis.
The upshot is, with the exception of chara, plant management on the lake this year has been easier and less expensive just like last year.
Our Clean Boats, Clean Water program is very active, this weekend making our 5th weekend at the public landing. Boat traffic has been mild on the weekends. And our new storage shed at the landing is built and repainted.
Last year we invested heavily in overhauling our aeration system and both east and west end systems ran smoothly throughout the winter. We are due to replace one of the west end motors this year. We also have some noise abatement issues to address for the West shed. But overall, our aeration systems are in great shape.
